Yesterday was my last ladies night at the San Diego Velodrome. This place has a lot of memories, mostly good, and some that will live with me forever. It was at this place that I rode a fixie for the first time at the Monday night class with Pam in 2009. It was the many social nights I’ve had cheering in the stands. It’s here that I watched my husband struggle with his pacemaker only to bounce back once it was dialed. It was here where my bike, Animal made his debut and I began to race. It was here where I was pushed to be a better cyclist.
As with most everything, it’s not necessarily the place that I’ll miss, but the people who’ve made it great. In high school, I remember thinking I’d miss lane 2 at our pool. But it was those girls that made all those laps worth it, and bearable. It was my lane mates who made that lane into what it was. When they tore down the pool, the memories didn’t go away.
The SD velodrome {aka coldest place in San Diego} is a place with great history. A lot of fast riders have made their first and many laps here. Sadly, one made her last lap too. :: Jackie, you will always ride with me. :: She was one of those girls who made this place special. She is always missed at a night like this.
Thanks to all the ladies who’ve made this place more than just that. A place. Ladies who’ve pushed me deep into some pain caves that I’m still wondering how I kept pedaling. Oh yeah, we’re on a fixed gear bike; thankfully the pedals keep turning themselves! Thanks to the ladies who work hard, but have fun doing it! Ladies who, whether on your team or not, are encouraging. Who stand up for participation, and show up to race.
Badass cycling chicas.
So, it’s not goodbye, it’s see you later. San Diego velodrome ladies – you rock!
{Thanks to Keenan Photography, Jinna Albright, and Matt Lingo for all the great shots at the track!}
